He’s also an experienced editor and author, so knows the challenges of creative writing. This workshop is for anyone interested in crime fiction and thrillers. For the writer, it is about using the scientific evidence to create plausibility and tension in the novel, as well as those hooks that keep the reader turning the pages. Richard Handy explains on this tour of the darker side of humanity.

EVENT LEADER BIO: Professor Richard Handy is an internationally respected academic, editor, author of historical spy thrillers and other historical fiction. He has over thirty years of experience as an editor, commissioning editor, and in book production/publishing. His spy thriller series, set in the 1930s and 1940s, involves the escapades of Danny Nash of the British Secret Intelligence Service. His non-fiction ranges from academic textbooks through to popular science books. In his academic work he is a pathologist/toxicologist specialising in poisons with over 200 publications and 70,000+ citations.
He works on matters relating to environmental and public safety, as well as clinical toxicology/forensics. He is an expert witness and has advised governments around the world. His current work in progress is an A to Z of poisons for crime writers. The next Danny Nash spy thriller will be published in 2026. He is a member of The Society of Authors and Exeter Writers.
